BASF INTERMEDIATES FOR THE COATINGS INDUSTRY - CHEMICAL BUILDING BLOCKS ENHANCE MODERN COATING MATERIALS

At the “European Coatings Show 2005”, which takes place in Nuremberg/Germany from April 26th to 28th, BASF will for the first time also shine a spotlight on chemical building blocks for modern coatings. Under the heading “New Building Blocks for the Coatings Industry”, Dr. Rainer Klopsch and Dr. Michael Henningsen of the New Business Development unit within BASF’s Intermediates division will present development options for innovative coating products. The basis for developing new and enhanced coatings is provided by the wide range of building blocks this division offers. “On the one hand, we are able to work out economic paths for manufacturing the building blocks our customers have developed,” Klopsch explains, “and on the other hand, we also create novel chemical building blocks that enable us to drive innovation in the coatings industry.”

BASF has supplied the coatings industry for many years with a wide range of high-value intermediates as chemical building blocks for manufacturing modern coating materials. “The coatings industry is characterized by dynamic innovation, therefore we see many starting points for promising developments in this field,” says Dr. Walter Gramlich, head of BASF’s Intermediates division. “We are ideally prepared for using our range of chemical building blocks, second to none in the world, as well as BASF’s integrated know-how structure to create special, innovative solutions for the coatings industry. And we also offer new intermediates and processes.”

Coatings, as all the different materials used to coat surfaces are commonly referred to, preserve value and provide visual attractiveness in all spheres of life: in automotive engineering, in shipbuilding, in the electronic industry, in construction. There are as many types of coating products as there are applications. They include liquid and dry coatings, air-drying, thermosetting and radiation-curable coatings. The industry volume is expected to grow by three to four percent, its value is even projected to rise by some five percent. Many different ingredients are needed to make modern coatings, for example various polymers, solvents, and of course a variety of intermediates, too. Modern coatings must not only fulfill their basic functions, i.e. provide protection, color and gloss, but must also meet a great variety of other requirements. These include UV stability and good adhesion along with scratch resistance, flexibility, good processing behavior and many others.

The operating division Intermediates of the BASF Group develops, produces and markets the world's largest range of intermediates. The most important of the division's more than 600 products include amines, diols, polyalcohols and acids. Among other applications, intermediates are used as starting materials for detergents, plastics, textiles, paints and coatings, medicines and crop protectants. The operating division has access to plants at 15 production sites in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In 2004, this BASF operating division generated world sales of EUR2 billion.
