THINNER, STRONGER HEAT-RESISTANT PARTS WITH NEW HIGH FLOW NYLON 46

A new high-flow Stanyl polyamide 46 (PA46) grade, 46HF4130, is now available from DSM Engineering Plastics.

Designed for large or intricate components, the new high-flow Stanyl polyamide 46 (PA46) grade 46HF4130 is 30% glass reinforced and heat stabilised to provide high strength at elevated temperatures.

Its flow behaviour is more than 160% that of standard 30% glass-filled PA46 formulations (170mm spiral flow at 1000 bar for 46HF4130 versus 100mm for conventional). The strength and flow properties of 46HF4130 provide application designers with greater freedom of design than conventional engineered materials.

With Stanyl 46HF3140, less injection pressure is required to fill moulds, enabling the design of large applications with excellent mechanical properties and low warpage. The weld-line strength of the new Stanyl grade is almost 40% higher than Punctually Aromatic Polyamides and four-times higher than liquid crystal polymer (LCP). In addition, the material’s high flow permits the use of a single gate for large applications.

“As more features and functionality are engineered into automotive engine and passenger compartments, designers increasingly demand materials that can be moulded to thin sections or extreme geometries,” said Harry Henssen, DSM’s global product manager for Stanyl. “The situation is the same for machines, appliances and tools—you see increasingly intricate arrays and configurations of components in a given assembly, and high mechanical strength is a must. The new HF4130 grade of Stanyl is designed for parts to meet these needs.”

Overall, 46HF4130 is a material well suited to:
• Precision moulded components
• Intricately designed and/or delicate parts
• Channels, connectors, or sensors requiring long flow length and thin walls
• Overmoulded connectors, manifolds, ductwork, or other parts

Stanyl 46HF4130 is the newest member of the Stanyl family of heat-resistant polyamide moulding compounds, produced and marketed exclusively by DSM and available worldwide. Stanyl is used in demanding applications in the automotive and electrical and electronics industries, as well as many other applications.

Stanyl is offered in a wide variety of grades including high flow, abrasion-resistant, and unfilled (non-reinforced), as well as grades containing glass fibres, minerals, lubricants, impact modifiers, or flame retardants. Higher crystallinity and a faster rate of crystallisation give Stanyl a technical edge over such engineering plastics as PA6, PA66, polyesters, and other high heat-resistant resins such as semi-aromatic polyamides (PPAs), polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), and LCPs. Compared to these, Stanyl grades show better heat resistance, mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, wear and friction behaviour and, with faster cycle time and increased flowability, improved processing economics.
