NEW GRADE OF PBT DESIGNED FOR AUTOMOTIVE GEAR HOUSINGS
15 December 2003 - DSM Engineering Plastics

DSM Engineering Plastics has introduced a new grade of Arnite polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) designed for automotive gear housings.

Designed for automotive gear housings, a new grade of Arnite PBT exhibits exceptional stiffness, dimensional stability and ductility, while at the same time reducing total assembly costs and weight. This new grade of Arnite PBT closes the performance gap between metal and plastic, thereby offering considerable advantages in weight reduction, design flexibility and assembly costs.

High Performance Arnite PBT was developed specifically to meet the performance requirements of the growing number of electromechanical gear and motor applications in the automotive industry, including wiper, window, cargo and side-door actuation, and moon roof and heating/air conditioning applications. The new resin provides an excellent balance of toughness and high stiffness in elevated temperature applications.

Additionally, high resistance to creep and fatigue, dimensional stability and stiffness are all factors that allow the manufacture of a moulded component that resists distortion, bending or unwanted movement under high-torque conditions.

This new material is a perfect complement to the existing portfolio of Arnite PBT formulations designed for demanding automotive applications.

Arnite is a focused line of thermoplastic polyester engineering materials based on polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Arnite grades exhibit excellent mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, as well as good chemical resistance and dimensional stability. The Arnite product line includes unreinforced and glass fibre reinforced grades.

Special grades are designed to minimise warpage, maximize impact strength, or optimise surface quality. In addition to injection moulding grades, the Arnite product line includes various extrusion grades.

About: DSM Engineering Plastics
DSM Engineering Plastics is a business group forming part of DSM's Performance Materials cluster. DSM EP is a global supplier of Stanyl PA46 and Akulon 6 and 66 polyamides, Arnitel TPE-E, Arnite PBT and PET polyesters, Xantar polycarbonate, Yparex extrudable adhesive resins, and Stamylan UH Ultra High Molecular Weight PE. These materials are used in technical components for electrical appliances, electronic equipment and cars, in barrier packaging films as well as in many mechanical and extrusion applications. The business group had annual sales of EUR 566 million in 2003. With Stanyl, it is the global market leader in high heat polyamides.

Stanyl is a family of heat-resistant polyamides from DSM Engineering Plastics. Stanyl’s high crystallinity (70% versus 50% for conventional PA66) results in high heat distortion temperatures of 190C for unreinforced grades, up to 290C for reinforced. Stanyl grades are used in automotive clutch plates, charge air coolers, chain tensioners; electrical components including motor frames and end laminates, circuit breakers, controls and connectors; and home and power tool components, including heat shields and heat-resistant utensils.
