A CLEAR VIEW OF THE TECHNICAL REFINEMENTS
25 April 2005 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Transparent aromatic grades of the TPU Desmopan® from Bayer MaterialScience AG are becoming increasingly popular as a material for ski boots. For example, manufacturer Nordica is utilizing the material for its new SPEEDMACHINE and BEAST models.

So too is Tecnica, who use the flexible material for their VENTO and DIABLO models. The material is used to manufacture the injection-molded shell and upper. “The TPU gives you a clear insight into the 'inner life' and technical refinements of the boot. This not only offers greater design freedom, it also enables the manufacturer to make his design skills and technical expertise clearly visible,” explains Luigi Cermesoni, head of the Sports & Leisure TPU segment in the TPU Business Unit at Bayer MaterialScience.

The transparent Desmopan® grades are based on polyethers and are available in hardnesses of 52 to 65 Shore D. Ski boots manufactured using this material display excellent color brilliance and exhibit no clouding even at wall thicknesses of up to six millimeters.

“The fact that they have good low-temperature impact strength and outstanding flexibility at low temperatures makes them ideal for manufacturing ski boots. Even in icy conditions, the boot still allows dynamic movement and offers the wearer maximum comfort,” explains Cermesoni. Moreover, the plasticizer- and halogen-free TPU materials are extremely resistant to wear and tear thanks to their high abrasion, tear and tear propagation resistance. The upper and shell are therefore not prone to scratches, nor are they easily damaged, e.g. when impacted by sharp ski poles. Some manufacturers also use the resilient TPU materials to produce small windows that protect decorative features and company logos in the highly stressed sole areas of sports shoes, for example.
