THE SOLVENT-FREE GENERATION
20 April 2005 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| The coatings experts at Bayer MaterialScience have developed new aliphatic polyurethane dispersions for the coating of wood. Bayhydrol® XP 2557, Bayhydrol® XP 2558 and Bayhydrol® XP 2593 equal or exceed the high property levels of their respective predecessors, yet are entirely free of solvents. |
This means that they also contain no N-methyl pyrrolidone, which is considered harmful. Furthermore, they require less cosolvent than their predecessors for film formation. The choice of a cosolvent is left to the coatings formulator. “The new generation comprises three polyurethane dispersions, just like the prior generation, so that we can continue to accommodate the wishes of our customers world-wide,” says Dr. Christoph Irle of the Bayer MaterialScience Competence Center for Furniture, Wood and Parquet Coatings in Barcelona, Spain. Bayhydrol® XP 2557 can be used to formulate waterborne coatings that are particularly resistant to the abrasive action of dirt particles and the damage caused by the soles of shoes. Coatings formulated with Bayhydrol® XP 2593 are especially hard and also very “sole resistant”. Finally, Bayhydrol® XP 2558 enables the formulation of hard yet abrasion-resistant wood coatings. “Each product is thus optimized with respect to two of the three primary properties of a parquet coating,” says Irle. Rounding out this new product line is Bayhydrol® XP 2606, a new, solvent-free carbonate-polyurethane dispersion for the formulation of coatings with the utmost level of chemical resistance. Regardless of which of the new polyurethane dispersions is used: the resulting coatings dry quickly. The cured coatings do not yellow. And even their resistance to chemicals such as ethanol is on high level similar to that of coatings formulated with their solventborne predecessors. All of the dispersions can be combined perfectly with Bayhydur® polyisocyanates to form two-component polyurethane systems. They are also extremely compatible with Bayhydrol® R grade polyacrylate dispersions.
