DUPONT IN PACKAGING
25 April 2005 - DuPont Engineering Polymers
| Speech made by Danielle Blomert, Marketing Director, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers Europe at the press presentation of DuPont Security and Solutions on Friday 22 April 2005 |
Many people think of science as something very academic and remote that doesn’t concern them. In reality, science is a crucial part of everyday life, and there is a good chance that the “science” you use at work, at home, while traveling, or as part of your leisure activities, comes from DuPont. The engine behind this scientific powerhouse is a global organization consisting of more than 5,000 scientists (almost 10% of total employees), an annual R&D Budget of USD 1.3 billion (5% of sales revenue), 75 technical centers, resulting in 1700 patent applications last year. In each of the markets we serve, we take a holistic approach, pulling together a broad range of capabilities such as material science, process expertise, strong partnerships in the value chain, and deep market and application knowledge. Putting science to work and translating it into valuable solutions for our customers, consumers and society at large is only one of the cornerstones of our success. The other 2 pillars are the power of One DuPont, and a continuously strong desire to discover new markets and growth opportunities. Packaging of consumer goods is one of those strategic growth areas for DuPont. As you know, this is a very dynamic, 350 billion dollar industry constantly looking for more innovative and effective ways to deliver products and solutions that today’s consumers demand. DuPont has more than 80 years of experience in packaging technology, and currently supplies approximately 2 bn USD worth of high performance specialtyproducts for most packaging sectors including food & beverage, cosmetics, and medical packaging to 3’500 customers around the globe, with ongoing support from material and process experts in our technical centers in North America, Europe and Asia. Our material portfolio and expertise ranges from sealants and adhesives to coatings, from films to nonwovens, from modifiers to graphics and color management. Recognizing some of the existing inefficiencies in the packaging development process, as well as consumer goods companies need for faster and more sustainable innovation, DuPont has bundled its packaging resources and know-how under one umbrella, DuPont Packaging. The purpose of this initiative is to accelerate and facilitate packaging innovation through close collaboration with brand owners, packaging companies and designers, and by providing them direct access to DuPont’s worldwide scientific community. Furthermore, by integrating technologies and products from other industries (other than packaging), we have multiplied the potential for “cross-fertilization”, a powerful source of innovation. Through our contacts with consumer goods companies across the globe, we continue to learn about their needs, and have come to realize that one of the biggest – and fastest growing - challenges they face today is brand security and consumer safety. Recent dramatic incidents such as the case of Mey Drinks in Turkey illustrate that counterfeiting represents a major safety threat to society. Safety is one of DuPont’s core values and strengths, therefore we decided to help solve this global problem by developing a Security offering and integrating it into our packaging solutions portfolio.
