NEW “LOCK&PEEL” TECHNOLOGY BRINGS UNIQUE OPENING FEATURES AND GREATER PROCESSING FLEXIBILITY
25 April 2005 - DuPont Engineering Polymers

The new Lock&Peel technology from DuPont Packaging Solutions provides brand owners and packaging converters with greater freedom to design specific, unique peel properties for their packaging.

At the core of this innovative concept is a unique grade of DuPont™ Surlyn® ionomer resin which, depending on the selected seal temperature and other conversion parameters, delivers either a tight, hermetic “lock” seal or a well-controlled, “easy-open” peel solution.

The quality of a seal and its actual “opening behavior” are critical as they determine not only the freshness of goods upon arrival at the end customer, but also influence the overall quality perception by the consumer”, says Dr. Karlheinz Hausmann, development specialist at DuPont’s European Technical Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. “Application-specific, optimised peel concepts, such as the ones made possible by using Lock&Peel, can make a major contribution to the shelf-life of food products and the overall consumer experience”.

The peelability of sealing media is a function of the resin composition –typically a compound consisting of essentially incompatible ingredients - and conversion temperature, both of which can be adjusted along a broad spectrum to created truly customised solutions in terms of peel strength, whitening, a clean peel surface etc.

By using Lock&Peel, converters are able to meet individual brand requirements with one “multifunctional” peel system, thus reducing the number of material SKU’s to be kept on stock. Furthermore, “Lock&Peel” hardly deteriorates over time: even after long storage periods, the product shows only a minimal increase in peel strength and there is no risk of the packaging sealing completely – as can happen with other compounds.
