DUPONT’S SECURITY AND SOLUTIONS BUSINESS TO MARKET ESSENTIAL AUTHENTICATION TECHNOLOGIES
25 April 2005 - DuPont Engineering Polymers

DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers (P&IP) and its Security & Solutions business, are marketing two technologies arming brand-owners with the necessary tools in the ongoing fight against counterfeiting and tampering.

Developed by identif GmbH of Erlangen, Germany, with whom DuPont recently started a marketing agreement, Bio-Molecular Fingerprint (covert) and Color Spectra Film (overt) include human and machine detectable “signatures” that can be integrated into forgery-proof packaging or labelling for many essential products.

The marketing agreement marks the launch of an effort by DuPont to position itself as a worldwide leader in providing security related products and services for packaging products. Objectives for the business include the prevention and identification of counterfeit products and diverted goods, the protection of customer integrity and the avoidance of unnecessary costs.

Utilizing a combination of machine-readable (covert) and user-observable (overt) product authentication technologies, Bio-Molecular Fingerprint and Color Spectra Film can increase the product safety, performance and brand exclusivity of pharmaceuticals, luxury goods, arts and media products, branded apparel and automotive parts. In fact, Bristol-Myers Squibb uses identif GmbH authentication technology in the packaging of its anti-cancer and HIV drugs to avoid tampering or misrepresentation.

“There is a heightened global demand for product security protection against counterfeiters,” said Dr. Georg Bauer, managing director of identif GmbH. “We are convinced that DuPont is the right partner to market our authentication technologies because the company shares our conviction that safety and security is the highest priority.”

DuPont’s marketing of identif technologies is a direct result of DuPont’s purchase of an equity stake in the German company last December and a continuation of its packaging systems into the security technologies market as an integrator and solutions provider.

“Protecting consumers and brands in today’s global market requires solutions that are robust, technically sophisticated and yet easy to use,” said Volker Plehn, director for DuPont P&IP Security & Solutions business. “identif’s products meet these needs, and adding DuPont’s knowledge of the packaging industry will help us develop practical, innovative anti-counterfeiting solutions.”

In a further measure to help protect its customers against product and package counterfeiting and tampering, DuPont’s Security & Solutions business is offering Brand Protection and Authentication Workshops. Carolyn Burns, global marketing manager Security & Solutions business: “Utilizing the company’s scientific and technical packaging expertise, the workshops are tailored to meet specific areas of customer interest and can offer detailed client or market-centric research and analysis.”

Available as half-day or full day sessions, workshop topics will include the following: a history of counterfeiting, current global conditions, common packaging security terms, an examination of case studies and tools to protect brand integrity.
