FOR AFFORDABLE, LCP-LIKE PERFORMANCE AND WARP RESISTANCE, STANYL PA46 HIGH FLOW
09 October 2003 - DSM Engineering Plastics

DSM Engineering Plastics, a business group within the DSM Performance Materials cluster, announces the introduction of Stanyl PA46 High Flow.

With a heat and warp resistance similar to liquid crystal polymer (LCP), plus high flow characteristics for thinwall or highly detailed parts, Stanyl PA46 High Flow significantly lowers the cost of engineered materials for volume production. Stanyl PA46 High Flow is the latest addition to DSM’s flagship Stanyl PA46 product family, and is particularly suited for thinwall applications in E and E. These include electrical connectors, pin headers, and more, thanks to the new material’s flow characteristics and resistance to warpage.

Weld line strength is significantly higher than LCP, minimizing cracking during pin insertion. For demanding thinwall applications, Stanyl High Flow grades can replace LCP, providing the properties of LCP at substantially reduced cost. As with all Stanyl PA46 offerings, Stanyl PA46 High Flow provides resistance to distortion at high heat to 290C (554F) - as well as superior mechanical properties, excellent wear and friction behaviour, and production cycle times shorter than conventional polyamide 6 and 66.

In other applications, Stanyl is also used for automotive parts such as engine parts, chain tensioners, transmission clutch rings, bearing cages and emission control components.

Finally, there are many other electrical, appliance, and power tool uses for Stanyl PA46 High Flow. Stanyl PA46 High Flow rounds out DSM’s PA46 offering, which includes reinforced, lubricated, low-wear/low-friction, and flame-retardant (FR) grades. Anything that can benefit from thinwall or highly detailed parts that must face demanding ambient or use conditions can benefit from High Flow.

About: DSM Engineering Plastics
DSM Engineering Plastics is a business group forming part of DSM's Performance Materials cluster. DSM EP is a global supplier of Stanyl PA46 and Akulon 6 and 66 polyamides, Arnitel TPE-E, Arnite PBT and PET polyesters, Xantar polycarbonate, Yparex extrudable adhesive resins, and Stamylan UH Ultra High Molecular Weight PE. These materials are used in technical components for electrical appliances, electronic equipment and cars, in barrier packaging films as well as in many mechanical and extrusion applications. The business group had annual sales of EUR 566 million in 2003. With Stanyl, it is the global market leader in high heat polyamides.

Stanyl is a family of heat-resistant polyamides from DSM Engineering Plastics. Stanyl’s high crystallinity (70% versus 50% for conventional PA66) results in high heat distortion temperatures of 190C for unreinforced grades, up to 290C for reinforced. Stanyl grades are used in automotive clutch plates, charge air coolers, chain tensioners; electrical components including motor frames and end laminates, circuit breakers, controls and connectors; and home and power tool components, including heat shields and heat-resistant utensils.
