When manufacturing facilities face technical problems that can threaten a shut down, quick and accurate solutions are needed to save thousands, perhaps millions of dollars in lost production. Solutions are the core of Ashland's Analytical Services and Technology group, part of Ashland Specialty Chemical, a division of Ashland Inc. With capabilities that vary from determining minute formulation differences that impact results, to helping companies remain in compliance with federal regulations, AS&T brings together more than 500 years of combined scientific experience. The laboratory, based in Dublin, Ohio, boasts some of the industry's most sophisticated instrumentation. "We have recently added four new instruments and each brings an additional capability to our group," said Wayne Rohrbaugh, Ph.D., global technology director. AS&T obtained a UV-curing accessory for its dynamic rheometer; a new contact angle instrument used to measure the forces that affect the interaction between solids and liquids; a new inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer used for determining trace elements; and a new X-ray diffractometer used to identify and characterize crystalline compounds. "While we have excellent equipment, the equipment doesn't solve problems. It's the people who work in AS&T, with their specialized knowledge, insights, intuition, backgrounds and problem-solving abilities, that make AS&T so valuable," said Rohrbaugh. In addition to state-of-the-art equipment, AS&T scientists bring expertise in thermal analysis, rheology, physical testing, separations and environmental analysis, microscopy, spectroscopy, quality assurance, and Six Sigma1 methodology. Although AS&T is focused on serving Ashland businesses, its talent is also available on a contract basis to serve customers and key business partners. Ashland's Analytical Services and Technology group is part of Ashland Specialty Chemical, a division of Ashland Inc.
