The Films Business of ExxonMobil Chemical today announced plans to expand capacity at its Virton, Belgium facility by installing a new coating line. Construction is expected to take about 20 months with a scheduled start-up in late 2003. The new line will be used primarily to reinforce ExxonMobil's label business for coating plastic film in the fast-growing market of cans and bottles. Coated films are durable enough to handle the many constraints these types of applications generate by providing resistance to solvents and acids, facilitating the application of adhesive, and allowing for various printing techniques (rotogravure, flexography, offset etc.). The coater is 50 percent faster than previous machines available on the market and is anticipated to apply coatings on a wide variety of different substrates. Moreover, the new coater will increase the company's European coating capacity by 35 percent and provide the Films Business with the flexibilty to apply many different types of coatings. "This new investment will further strengthen our presence in the market as a leader in coated films technology," said Carlo Ranucci, President and General Manager, ExxonMobil Chemical Films Europe. "We are convinced that this new coater will be a catalyst in enabling us to provide our customers with services and expertise well beyond our current core products." The Virton plant began operations in 1980 and employs more than 500 people. It produces plastic films used for flexible packaging and labelling applications for consumer products such as confectionery, snacks, biscuits, beverages, household goods, cosmetics and toiletries.
