Lead-free technology is the latest subject under the microscope in the latest in a series of reference booklets from the Component Obsolescence Group about various aspects of electronic component and other areas threatened by obsolescence and the ways in which these impact on elements of industry.

The latest addition to the 'Obsolescence Minefield' series of publications is a 24 page booklet, The Pb-Free Minefield, which has been supported and sponsored by ELFNET - the European Lead-Free Soldering Network, an EU-funded project aiming to bring together Europe's research experts to optimise and accelerate the lead-free transition. It has been put together in association with Alan Brewin of the National Physical Laboratory.

Obsolescence has been identified by ELFNET as one of a set of priority issues requiring urgent action. Dr Jeremy Pearce, ELFNET Coordinator, comments that the work of COG, including publication of this latest guidance document, is a major contribution in achieving this aim and encapsulates the major problems and the definitive answers that the legislation will almost certainly generate.

COG's Mike Trenchard emphasises the urgency of the problem-solving exercise. "There is already a danger that exempted customers may soon find that there is no leaded stock left."

The NPL's Alan Brewin warns that too many user and manufacturers are overlooking or ignoring areas that are crucial to a viable implementation of the EU Directive.

According to COG the booklet goes well beyond much of the material that has been published to-date and offers a single source of information. that will be invaluable to industry. Further details can be obtained by accessing the Group's web site.

The 'Obsolescence Minefield' series are designed to be comprehensive and informative and suitable for both engineers and management. Some of the subjects that have been covered in the series include Date Coding, the Supply Chain, Long Term Storage of Components, and the pitfalls associated with Redundant Stock.
