YALE CANCER CENTER PARTICIPATES IN CONNECTICUT CANCER PARTNERSHIP

Today Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell presented the state cancer control plan developed by the Connecticut Cancer Partnership, a consortium of Connecticut's top cancer professionals working to implement a comprehensive plan for cancer control in the state.

According to Partnership Board Chair Andrew L. Salner, M.D., director of Cancer Programs at Hartford Hospital, the Plan aims to "reduce the burden of cancer and improve the quality of life of people with cancer in the state of Connecticut."

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Connecticut, following heart disease, and the state ranks eighth in the nation for new cancer cases annually. Through 2008, the Plan will tackle a broad range of issues, including prevention, early detection, treatment, survivorship and end-of-life care. The first priority is to overcome ethnic and racial disparities in diagnosis and care of people with cancer.

"The mission of a federally designated cancer center, such as the Yale Cancer Center, is to save lives through prevention, early diagnosis and improved treatment," said Richard Edelson, director of the Yale Cancer Center. "This unified statewide cancer plan is a huge step in that direction."

The Partnership is a broad consortium of hospitals, public health officials, academic institutions, community groups, insurers, health care providers, researchers, cancer organizations, patient care services, cancer survivors and consumers. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided planning funds for the Partnership and recently funded the move into an implementation phase.

Founding partners include the American Cancer Society, the Connecticut State Medical Society, the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the University of Connecticut Health Center, and the Yale Cancer Center.

All Partnership members serve on a voluntary basis and individuals or organizations interested in any aspect of cancer control and prevention can join.
