STADCO NAMED SUPPLIER OF THE YEAR IN DTI AWARDS
The Awards are part of the Supply Chain Group programme, a Department of Trade and Industry initiative which was launched in March 2003 and which has received some £15 million of Government funding. This is the second year of the Awards which focuses on so-called 'host' companies in the aerospace and automotive industries working with their suppliers to improve competitiveness and profitability and improve quality and delivery. Thirty two host companies form the Supply Chain Group, with over 300 suppliers. In Stadco's case, host company Caterpillar X-Part nominated it for the Award. Stephen Bates, Senior Industry Adviser, DTI Automotive Unit said that the quality of nominations this year was extremely high. He went on: "However, Stadco stood out and won for four key reasons. It had a dramatically improved delivery performance. It strengthened its relationship and communications with the host company. It demonstrated flexibility, speed and thoroughness in response to the MG Rover collapse (Caterpillar X-Part supplies parts for the full range of MG Rover vehicles). And it reduced its normal lead time to under six months". Chris Fisher, Stadco Group Supply Chain Manager, who received the Award from TV presenter Tiff Needell, said: "This is a real accolade for us since we were in the company of more than 300 other major industry suppliers. We bent over backwards to keep the parts supply going during the difficult months of the MG Rover crisis and its good to receive such a prestigious recognition of the efforts put in by everyone who was involved at Stadco". Chris Fisher explained the background to the Award: "The demise of MG Rover resulted in 197 major parts, including doors, boots and bonnets, not being available to the aftermarket since these where previously supplied directly to Xpart from Longbridge. Had this continued it would have been catastrophic in terms of vehicle residual values, with accident-damaged cars having to be written off just because they didn't have a bonnet or door. Due to our relationship with Xpart we were able to forge a partnership to develop processes to make the components in a very short timescale. I believe the level of commitment and flexibility is unprecedented. Never before has anyone taken 197 major body assemblies, made up of almost 3,000 individual parts, engineered them and begun supplying within six months. "The partnership with Xpart is creating a sustainable spare parts supply chain that supports MG Rover drivers and the insurance industry alike and I strongly believe that without Stadco's involvement the future for them would have been very bleak", said Mr Fisher. Stadco is a multi-site manufacturer of automotive body panels for many of the world's leading vehicle producers including Ford, Jaguar, BMW, Land Rover, Peugeot, Volkswagen and Aston Martin. Stamping, welding and painting are the company's core activities. These are supported by a complete management service covering all functions from product design and development through to volume production.
