Production has started on schedule at Eka Bahia in Brazil, the plant operated by Akzo Nobel's Pulp and Paper Chemicals business, Eka Chemicals, which is producing chemicals for the Veracel pulp mill.

Eka has a 15-year contract with Veracel to supply chemicals and run chemicals operations at the pulp mill, which is run by Stora Enso and Aracruz Cellulose and has an annual capacity of 900,000 tons.

"All personnel, both from Eka Bahia and those working within the project have done a fantastic job and succeeded in delivering on time, despite the difficulties and challenges presented by the size of the project," said Val Suchek, head of Eka Chemicals in Brazil.

The Eka plant, which is referred to in the chemicals business as a Chemical Island, is made up of several units, including a sodium chlorate plant, a chlorine dioxide plant, an oxygen plant and storage tanks for products produced externally.

It has the capacity to produce 58,000 tons of sodium chlorate per annum and 45 tons of chlorine dioxide a day. Around 90 tons of oxygen can also be supplied daily.
