PLANTS REACH SAFETY MILESTONES
15 December 2004 - Akcros Chemicals

Two joint venture operations involving Akzo Nobel's Energy business recently passed important safety milestones.

Both located in the Netherlands, the Salinco plant in Hengelo reached 15 years without a lost time injury, while Delfzijl's Delesto facility passed the nine-year LTI-free mark.

Salinco, which has 38 employees, is a 50/50 joint venture between the Energy business and Dutch company Essent. Together they run a cogeneration plant which supplies electricity, steam, compressed air and water to various businesses at the Hengelo location.

The main customer for electricity is Akzo Nobel's chlorine production plant, while the steam is mainly used by the company's salt production facility. A large part of the produced electrical power is also exported to the public grid.

"We are proud that we have reached the 15 year mark because we know that many other plants don't manage to achieve such milestones," said plant manager Andre Amelink. "But we are very aware that it could be ended very quickly and all our employees are trained to be safety conscious every minute of every day."

Over in Delfzijl, the Delesto cogeneration facility (pictured), which has 74 employees, is another 50/50 joint venture between Akzo Nobel and Essent.

The modern, natural gas-powered, combined-cycle plant provides process steam and electric power to various customers located at the Delfzijl chemical park, with the balance of electric power being exported to the public grid.

"One of the main reasons we've reached nine years without an LTI is that there's commitment from everyone who works for Delesto," explained production and maintenance manager, Peter van den Berg.

"If everyone wasn't enthusiastically and professionally committed to our safety efforts, then we wouldn't be achieving our safety targets.

"But safety is always number one here and we like to mark each LTI-free year by presenting our employees with a small gift, which we've done again this year, to 'celebrate' reaching another important landmark."
