ADVANTECH EMBEDDED COMPUTING IN ASIA
Henry Lee, Vice President of Advantech's Embedded Computing Group, discusses trends and Advantech's involvement in Asia's embedded computing market. Advantech's product strategy continues to support x86 high performance, high computing power platforms based on Intel architecture, with increasing support for RISC solutions that range from silicon level development to software integration and post sales support. The embedded market trend increasingly wants capabilities associated with x86 CPU platforms, but at a lower cost, lower power consumption and faster time-to-market development. x86 platforms deliver this high performance, but tradeoff the performance characteristics mentioned above that customers want more of. Advantech continues to enhance our x86 solutions by giving customers the newest CPU/chipsets and feature sets to drive their applications, but with better collaboration and customization services such as System on Module and our 30 Day Design to Order service. However, the market trend shows many embedded customers simply don't need the extra features and performance overhead found on PC-based systems, which explains the growing popularity of RISC-based embedded computing applications and Advantech's increased involvement in developing solutions that match our customers' and the market's needs. ARM-based architecture is an open platform standard from a hardware point of view. The embedded OS and platform are developed together, which differs from x86 application development. Until now, RISC customers usually had to build their applications from scratch. That is, they built their hardware platform, ported their OS and middleware and then developed their application. This process is slow and time consuming, but has opened new opportunities in the market for more effective and innovative RISC development solutions.
