2-COMPONENT SENSOR FOR MEASURING FORCE AND TORQUE
21 April 2006 - Kistler Instruments

The space available for precision instruments to carry out sophisticated force and torque measurements on assembling and testing machines is usually very restricted. Thus, in applications such as monitoring screw-driving processes or testing the operation of combined push and turn switches or threaded fasteners, the top priorities are compactness and ease of installation. The Kistler solution is a small 2-component sensor that measures both force and torque, thus eliminating the need for two separate sensors.

Kistler's new 2-component Fz, Mz Type 9345A sensor is extremely compact and combines the measurement of a tensile/compressive force of –10, 10 kN and a torque of –25 ... 25 N•m. It is mechanically compatible with the established Type 9349A reaction torque sensor and also comes with threaded mounting flanges at either end and a centering seat. This makes the sensor simple to install and easy to adapt to a whole range of measurement tasks. A center hole permits the passage of shafts.

Thanks to their high sensitivity, extreme rigidity and high natural frequency, piezoelectric sensors are ideally suited for research and development work (e.g. measuring feed force and torque in drilling printed circuit boards, in thread cutting or in designing compression, tension and torsion springs). A further advantage of piezoelectric sensors by comparison with other types of measuring principles is that they offer an extremely wide measuring range covering several decades. Moreover, if properly handled, they have a virtually unlimited service life, being immune to wear or fatigue.

About: Kistler Instruments
Kistler is one of the world's leading suppliers of measurement technology. Kistler pressure sensors, force sensors and accelerometers use the piezoelectric effect for precise measurement of mechanical properties.

Kistler is a privately-owned Swiss company which develops and manufactures sensors and electronics for measuring pressure, force and acceleration.

Additionally, the functionality of electronics plays an increasing role when defining a measuring system and even more frequently, electronics in fact becomes part of the sensor itself. Most of Kistler's products have been developed in close cooperation between leading universities or research facilities and Kistler's engineers.

Investments in Kistler's research department have led to the development of new crystals which enable reliable measurements to be taken under the most extreme environmental conditions. The results of our in-depth crystal research will give us a leading edge in advancing the state-of-the-art.
