Honeywell announced today it has developed a new engine type design and manufacturing process to produce a Federal Aviation Administration certified engine. The new process takes FAA-approved parts and certain T53-L-703 and T53-L-13B components and reworks them to unique original equipment manufacturer's specifications, producing an FAA-certified T5317BCV engine model. The T5317BCV engine will be delivered as a zero-time engine that is backed by a full 4-year/2,000 hour factory warranty. The T5317BCV engine provides 1,800 takeoff shaft horsepower at sea level, standard day, uninstalled conditions and includes new features such as air cooled turbine nozzles and turbine blades. The engine, destined for the Bell Helicopter Model 210 Helicopter, also features several other durability improvements which result in the engine's initial time between overhaul interval being established at 5,000 hours. The T5317BCV engine is an updated, FAA-certified version of existing T53-L-703 and T53-L-13B engines which are not FAA-certified engines. "The Bell 210 helicopter is a commercial aircraft and requires a FAA-certified engine," said Bob Miller, program director, Light and Utility Helicopters at Honeywell. "Honeywell developed the manufacturing process in support of the B210 aircraft and is now able to offer the engine to other aircraft OEMs who desire this cost-effective engine. The commercial certification of the T5317BCV engine provides the customer with a zero-time engine that incorporates only genuine OEM components and all-new rotating life limited parts." Additionally, the T5317BCV engine will be maintained to the Honeywell's commercial manuals and standards versus the traditional military standard approach, which allows the operator to have the engine serviced by Honeywell's worldwide network of approved service centers.
