Honeywell announced today that its Bendix/King KGP 560 Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System will be included as standard equipment on all Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft models. "The KGP 560 offers protection from Controlled Flight Into Terrain, one of the leading causes of general aviation fatalities, and we believe Cirrus is giving its customers a big boost in safety by including it," said Dan Barks, Honeywell Director of Marketing for Business, Regional & General Aviation. The technology in the KGP 560 is derived from Honeywell's air transport EGPWS. The system utilizes aircraft position information from a Global Positioning System, comparing it to an internal data base of terrain and obstacles to provide a moving map display of nearby terrain and tall structures. It also provides visual and audio alerts should the aircraft approach too close to these hazards. Since the introduction of EGPWS in 1996, Honeywell has delivered over 35,000 systems. Honeywell has documented more than 30 incidents where EGPWS provided timely alerts to pilots who subsequently maneuvered away from a hazard. Cirrus manufactures composite personal aviation aircraft, incorporating advanced technologies that result in high levels of performance, safety and comfort.
