NEW RECTIFIERS & TVS IN SMP PACKAGE FEATURE HIGH 2-A POWER RATING & TYPICAL THERMAL RESISTANCE
06 May 2006 - Vishay Electronic

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. today launched a new package type for its rectifier and transient voltage suppressor products that delivers the same current and power ratings as the SMA package in a 44% smaller footprint. Setting a new standard for rectifier current density, devices in the new SMP package handle up to 2 A while delivering industry-record levels of thermal resistance.

The more than 45 new Vishay Semiconductors devices being released today in the new SMP package include Schottky, standard, and ultrafast rectifiers as well as transient voltage suppressors. The new devices are aimed at power supply and power conversion applications in desktop and notebook PCs, servers, disk drives, mobile phones, PDAs, hybrid ICs, and automobile electronic sensors and control units, where the 1-mm height and 2-mm by 3.8-mm footprint of the SMP package allows designers to reduce the size of power circuitry and thus enable more space-efficient end products.

Six Schottky rectifiers in the SMP package were released today. Designed for secondary rectification of ac-to-dc and dc-to-dc converters, freewheeling, and polarity protection, they can handle voltages from 20 V to 40 V and maximum currents of 1 A (device numbers SS1P3L and SS1P4L) and 2 A (device numbers SS2P2, SS2P3, SS2P4, SS2P2L, and SS2P3L). Featuring a very low forward voltage drop, these rectifiers improve power efficiency and generate less heat in end products, resulting in increased reliability and a higher comfort level during use.

New standard rectifiers announced today (S1PB through S1PJ) can handle 1 A and 50 V to 600 V of power, making them the optimal solution for general-purpose rectification, polarity protection, and rail-to-rail protection in automotive applications.

With 1 A and 50 V to 200 V capabilities, the new ultrafast rectifiers offer designers a choice of recovery times as fast as 15 ns for computers and other consumer electronics applications (device numbers ES1PB through ES1PD) or low leakage currents for the high-temperature automotive environment (device numbers ESH1PB through ESH1PD).

Typical junction-to-case thermal resistance for all of the above products is a low 20 °C/W.

Offering twice the power rating of the nearest competitor in a sub-SMA package, Vishay's new TVS devices in the SMP package can handle up to 400 W with breakdown voltages from 13 V to 43 V. Used in consumer, computer, industrial, and automotive applications, the new devices (TPSMP13 through TPSMP43A) are designed to protect ICs, transistors, signal lines of sensor units, and electronic units from electrostatic discharges, lightning surges, and other transient voltages.

The single-chip, surface-mount SMP (DO-220AA) package of these new rectifiers and TVS features solder pads that are compatible with other SMD devices, so no modification is needed to the PCB layout when they are used as higher-performing upgrades to existing devices.
