A new miniature silicon NPN planar phototransistor that gives designers a low-cost way to build backlighted displays that respond automatically to changes in ambient light was announced today by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc.

Constructed with Vishay's PCB Mold Technology, the TEMT6000 surface-mount sensor is a low-cost device capable of serving as a daylight sensor for backlight dimming in mobile phones, notebook computers, PDAs, cameras, video cameras, dashboards, and plasma televisions. With an ultra-small footprint measuring 4.0 mm by 2.0 mm, the Vishay Semiconductors TEMT6000 sensor allows designers to save space in or enhance the functionality of these systems.

The TEMT6000 sensor features a peak sensitivity of 570 nm and a wide angle of half-sensitivity of ±60°. Although the device is highly sensitive to ambient light, it suppresses the infrared spectrum to offer improved "human eye"-like responsiveness to the visible light spectrum.

The TEMT6000 sensors are rated for an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +85 °C. These lead (Pb)-free devices are RoHS- and WEEE-compliant and are suitable for lead (Pb)-free IR reflow soldering processes with a solder temperature rating of 260 °C.

Samples and production quantities of the new ambient light sensor are available now with lead times of 6 to 8 weeks for larger orders.
