Two new super-red and super-yellow four-digit clock displays that provide excellent readability even under bright ambient lighting were announced today by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. The Vishay Semiconductors super-red and super-yellow displays, with typical dominant wavelengths of 631 nm and 589 nm, respectively, feature typical luminosity of 6 mcd per segment at 10 mA for full visibility at distances up to 7 m. The devices' exceptional readability is further enhanced by 10-mm character size, a dark surface, and untinted segments. Each display is designed with an active colon between the second and third digits, enabling it to serve as a clock display in televisions, set-top boxes, audio/video systems, microwave ovens, and clock radios. Decimal dots also incorporated into the display design allow it to be used as a four-digit display in medical instrumentation, temperature indicators, elevator controls, and measuring instruments. Discrete digit operation is possible with pinning. Based on highly efficient AllnGaP technology, both the super-red TDCR1050/1060 and super-yellow TDCY1050/1060 are available in common anode and common cathode versions. The two new devices join the green TDCG1050/1060 to complete Vishay's high-end series of high-visibility LED displays. The new displays measure a compact 14 mm by 40 mm, with a low height profile of 7 mm. They are rated for operation over a temperature range of -40°C to +80°C, with reverse voltage of 5 V, forward current of 25 mA, and power dissipation of 60 mW. Samples and production quantities of the TDCR1050/1060 and TDCY1050/1060 displays are available now, with lead times of four weeks for larger orders.
