A new surface-mount infrared receiver module that offers the industry's best transmission distance, up to 15 m (49 ft.) -was released today by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc.. Designed for long-distance and high data-rate operation in infrared remote control and IR data transmission applications, the new TSOP5700 is intended for use in multimedia systems including interactive TV, set-top boxes, game controllers, and wireless keyboards, as well as light curtains and medical equipment. The TSOP5700 receiver module combines a photo detector and preamplifier in a single package with a compact footprint of 7.2 mm by 5.3 mm. With a slim 4-mm height profile, the device is suitable for both top- and side-view assembly on a printed circuit board, allowing manufacturers to cut component costs by using the same module in a variety of space-saving designs. Maximum data rate for the new TSOP5700 is 20 kbit/s. Operating on a 455-kHz carrier frequency, the device is optimized for multimedia applications with a demodulated output signal that can be decoded directly by a microprocessor. Internal Automatic Gain Control circuitry provides enhanced immunity against all kinds of light-source disturbances, while an external metal shielding offers superior protection against EMI. The receiver module's epoxy package doubles as an IR filter. An internal band filter allows PCM frequency operation. Specified for supply voltages of 2.7 V to 5.5 V, the TSOP5700 is capable of receiving a high envelope duty cycle and has a short settling time after power-on. The new device is TTL- and CMOS-compatible. Samples and production quantities of the TSOP5700 infrared receiver modules are available now, with lead times of 10 weeks for larger orders.
