NEW LITTLE FOOT SC-89 POWER MOSFETS SET RECORDS FOR ON-RESISTANCE
29 April 2002 - Vishay Electronic

Siliconix incorporated, an 80.4%-owned subsidiary of Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. is adding to its family of LITTLE FOOT power MOSFETs in the tiny 6-lead SC-89 with three new devices that set records for on-resistance in this package type and which include the industry's smallest level-shifted load switch.

With a 0.6-mm height profile that is 45% thinner and a 2.56-mm2 footprint that is 45% smaller than the SC-70, the new SC-89 LITTLE FOOT devices allow small to medium loads to be switched with maximum efficiency in even the lightest and thinnest cell phones, pagers, and other battery-operated systems.

All three new devices set records for on-resistance as the first sub-ohm MOSFETs in the SC-89, prolonging battery life with their efficient operation. The single p-channel Si1039X and Si1037X offer respective rDS(on) ratings of 165 m and 195 m at a -4.5-V gate drive and can handle up to -0.95 A of current.

The new Si1040X, the industry's smallest load switch with level shift, allows a low-voltage microcontroller to control loads on a range of different voltage rails, reducing component count for the power management function and freeing space for additional features in portable electronic systems.

Incorporating both n-channel and p-channel MOSFETs in its single SC-89 package, the Si1040X eliminates the need for a separate device to give a true ground-referenced low-voltage logic input. The device uses its n-channel MOSFET as a level shift to drive the p-channel MOSFET, which is tailored for use as a load switch. The n-channel MOSFET has internal ESD protection and can be driven by logic signals as low as 1.5 V, allowing the Si1040X to operate on supply lines from 1.8 V to 8 V and to drive loads up to 0.43 A. Only a resistor is needed for a complete solution.

The Si1040X answers the need for smaller level-shifted load switches in cell phones and other handheld systems as more and more components are going to lower voltages, while certain loads, such as power amplifiers, remain at voltages rails of 5 V and higher.

Samples and production quantities of the Si1037X, Si1039X, and Si1040X are available now, with lead times of four weeks for larger orders.
