NEW ADDITIONS TO VISHAY'S MICROFACE IRDA TRANSCEIVER FAMILY

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has announced the release of three new additions to its MicroFace series of IrDA-compliant transceivers, expanding the options available to designers in the industry's smallest package for this device type. The expanded series now offers increased operating distance and varying power supply options, and is optimized for use in space-limited, power-restricted products, including PDAs, cellular phones, pagers, and other handheld battery-operated equipment.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has announced the release of three new additions to its MicroFace series of IrDA-compliant transceivers, expanding the options available to designers in the industry's smallest package for this device type. The expanded series now offers increased operating distance and varying power supply options, and is optimized for use in space-limited, power-restricted products, including PDAs, cellular phones, pagers, and other handheld battery-operated equipment.

With typical dimensions of just 7.3 mm x 4.55 mm x 2.8 mm, the new Vishay Telefunken TFDU4202, TFDU4203, and TFDU4204 all feature a wide supply voltage range from 2.4 V to 5.5 V, and are operational down to 2 V. With high electromagnetic interference immunity and built-in current control, the transceivers require the fewest external components for a complete infrared data communications solution.

Compared with the first MicroFace transceiver, the TFDU4201, Vishay's new TFDU4203 provides increased output intensity, allowing for a greater operating distance. TFDU4203 features include a maximum operating distance close to 70 cm - more than the IrDA's low-power standard, but still small enough to allow for a single power supply and reduced power consumption as compared to a full 1-m range device. It operates on as little as 65 μA in the receive mode and 0.01 μA in the shutdown mode.

At lower operating voltages up to 3.3 V, the new TFDU4202 can be operated without an external current limiting resistor to achieve a range above 1 m. It additionally features a split power supply, a technology first pioneered by Vishay Telefunken in its 4000 series. With a split power supply connection, power supply costs are reduced since only the receiver circuit is connected to a regulated power supply, while the high IR current is generated by a less controlled power line or directly from the battery.
