NEW IRDA-COMPLIANT DEVICES ENABLE 4 MEGABIT PER SECOND DATA COMMUNICATION
26 May 2000 - Vishay Electronic
| The industry's first fast infrared IrDA-compliant transceivers to offer aheight profile of just 1.8 mm above the printed circuit board wereannounced today by Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. The new Vishay Telefunken TFDS6401 and TFDS6402 are the latestproducts to be offered in the Vishay Telefunken "Dracula" package, which mounts to the edge of the PCB and thus dramatically reduces the transceiver's height relative to the board. |
Complying with IrDA standards, the new transceivers offer datatransmissions rates up to 4 megabits per second at 1-meter distances. Theywill be used to enable infrared links among and between notebook andpalmtop computers, digital still and video cameras, cell phones andpagers, and medical and industrial data collection devices. The TFDS6401 and TFDS6402 will also be used to enable exchange of files between these mobile systems and desktop computers, printers, fax machines, photocopiers, and set-top boxes. Integrated TFDS6401 and TFDS6402 components include a photo pin diode, a high-power emitter, and low-power analog control circuitry. Internal AGC circuitry ensures maximum sensitivity to infrared light, even with high level of optical interference. An operating voltage range of 2.6 V to 5.5 V allows designers to use a single device for end products with a wide range of supply voltages. The TFDS6401 provides an auto-detect plug-and-play feature that allows super I/Os from SMSC andother suppliers to recognize the Vishay Telefunken part and automatically install the correct drivers. The TFDS6402 provides a tri-state output on the RXD pin, allowing several devices-whether IrDA transceivers or other components-to share the same communications bus. "These new transceivers make fast infrared connectivity at 1-meter distances an affordable feature for even the smallest hand held electronic systems," said Jan Nilsson, Director of Marketing for Vishay Telefunken IrDC products. Samples and production quantities of the TFDS6401 and TFDS6402 are available now, with lead times of 8 to 10 weeks for larger orders.
