Glass artist Benoit, who has work exhibited in places as diverse as the Museum of Modern art in New York, and on the Champs Elysee in Paris, has worked in glass for almost 50 years and now prefers to work with polycarbonate sheet instead of traditional glass. The limitations of glass meant that he could not interpret his vision of multi layered colours and textures, within one sheet of material. Developing new, and still secret, techniques, Benoit who is 71, has managed to achieve startling colour effects. The artist says that Quinn Plastics' polycarbonate sheet has allowed him to experiment and create a series of laminated panels, that display the complexities of his work as glass never could. Antoine Benoit comments: "Working with polycarbonate has brought an extra dimension to my work. The material combines transparancy, integration of colours and strength, a unique combination that can not be rivalled by organic glass." Quinn Plastics supplied QUINN PC sheets in 3 and 4mm thickness, which Benoit then worked on in his Paris studio, to interpret the designs that reflect many organic features of the world. The designer has been so impressed by the creative possibilities of polycarbonate sheet that he has begun to look into other ways to use the material as an alternative to the stained glass techniques, for which he is renowned. Benoit is recognised as one of the leading designers and craftsmen in the material. More than 40 countries around the world have installations of Benoits' work in glass. One of his latest commissions was for the giant Schlumberger office building in Paris, where he was asked to create a directional signage system that was both visually beautiful and simple to follow.
