BORSOFT, VERY SOFT AND TRANSPARENT POLYPROPYLENE
03 September 2001 - Borealis A/S

Random-Heterophasic-Copolymers combine the advantages of PP random copolymers with those of PP heterophasic copolymers in an unique way. For the cast film technology with chillroll process, Borsoft SD233CF was specially designed to combine following properties:

high softness and flexibility
very good low temperature resistance
high tenacity
very good optical properties
excellent sealing characteristics

Such a property combination is unique in Europe. The combined softness, transparency feature especially allows entrance to the following applications:

films for medical pouches
substitution of PVC films and glass bottles
transparent, soft packaging film with high tenacity and good low temperature resistance
transparent food packaging films
co-extrusion (soft core layer)
blend partner in mixtures

Borsoft SD200CF is a more opaque version of SD233CF. Typically this grade is used for soft stationery films with opaque surface, textile packaging or technical films for protection purposes. Borsoft grade SA233CF was developed for blown film technology. This new grade can be easily processed on existing PE blown film equipment with air cooling.

Typical advantages of PP blown films made with Borsoft SA233CF are:

excellent mechanical properties (strength, tenacity)
very good processing behaviour
higher heat resistance in comparison to PE
soft, flexible characteristics
good water vapour barrier

The following applications are currently targeted with this material:

heavy duty bags
refill pouches
soft hygienic films
inliner for textile fabrics

The high mechanical properties and excellent draw down behaviour in particular permit a significant downgauging of existing applications, often such a material can be used in blends or coextrusion with various PE polymers.
