BOREALIS NEW HIGH STIFFNESS, HIGH CRYSTALLINE BORMOD PP HOMOPOLYMERS FOR MODERN FLEXIBLE PACKAGING SOLUTIONS
03 September 2001 - Borealis A/S

In May 2000 the world's first Borstar PP plant was started up by Borealis. This new generation of process technology enables a further expansion of product property window and application possibilities. A special feature of Borstar PP technology is its improved high crystallinity PP grades, especially tailored for castfilm applications. Based on a high and balanced impact/stiffness level it is possible to serve brand new application areas, not previously covered by PP. Additionally, product economics and performance are improved for existing applications.

Packaging developers using cast films rely heavily on a property combination of very high rigidity, heat resistance and water vapour barrier. For the flexible packaging industry this results in:

Advantages in ease of processing -no rewinding required for high quality thin films. Reduction or elimination of fillers due to high rigidity.

Cost advantages – film gauge reduction of 10-30 %; Replacement of laminate structures through coextrusion with highly rigid PP as temperature resistant layer

Entrance into new application areas, such as twist films for packaging of confectionery and sugar coated sweets, labels with good printability, high heat resistance and easy punching, metallisable films with high purity and good adhesion to metal.

Today Borealis offers two tailor-made Bormod grades for the PP castfilm/flexible packaging industry:

Bormod HD905CF for food packaging, twist wrap, stationery films and high heat resistant coex layers/applications
Bormod HC915CF, stearate free and very clean grade for the converting/metallising industry, for labels and for medical applications

This development provides further proof underlining Borealis technical expertise and experience in developing advanced polymers for the packaging industry and especially for the castfilm area, always in close partnership with our customers.
