NEW HIGH PERFORMANCE PP MATERIALS FOR OFFLINE PAINTED CAR BODY PANELS
The automotive industry is confronted with permanent changes in terms of security legislation, reduction of fuel consumption, weight saving, cost reduction and design. To tackle all these challenges, the need for new materials and methods of manufacturing is a high priority in the development departments at the OEM, the system suppliers and the raw material suppliers. Recent years have seen the increasing development and use by major OEM's of new systems based on plastic materials to replace steel for car body panelling. The major advantages of plastic materials are design freedom, weight and cost reduction, less sensitivity to petty damage and improved acoustic behaviour. In this field Borealis offers innovative High Performance PP compounds which have been successfully tested in different feasibility studies at major OEMs. We offer three grades for offline painted body panels: Daplen ED235HP – a high stiffness grade Having the right materials for such innovative applications is a prerequisite to access further interesting markets for PP. But becoming a competent partner in the development phase for plastic body panels demands more than just the material. Borealis is well equipped for this role, by being able to run mould flow simulations, warpage / shrinkage simulations including optimisation of cooling systems, static and dynamic stress analyses, simulation of thermal expansion, paintability evaluations and mechanical testing on parts. We believe that only in well-organised cross-company and cross-disciplinary project teams can the best technical and commercial solutions be achieved. This has been the driving force for us to establish an effective project organisation across departments in Borealis, with the openness to bridge the borders between ourselves and the customer's project organisation.
