BOREALIS COMPLETES MECHANICAL CONSTRUCTION OF ITS FIRST BORSTAR PP PLANT

The EUR 140 million project was executed on budget and with a good safety performance record. As the plant is the first of its kind, Borealis' R&D organisation has been heavily involved during the engineering and construction phase of the project, developing the process details and the initial product slate. Thanks to the concurrent development work, engineering and construction work was completed within 21 months after signing the Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract.

As the plant is the first of its kind, Borealis' R&D organisation has been heavily involved during the engineering and construction phase of the project, developing the process details and the initial product slate. Thanks to the concurrent development work, engineering and construction work was completed within 21 months after signing the Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract.

The main EPC contractor was Neste Engineering, part of the Finnish energy group Fortum, and modifications to the existing plants at the site were done by Tecon Engineering, a local engineering company in Austria. Commissioning of the plant is already underway, and the plant is expected to start up in May this year.

The Borstar PP process technology is based on Borealis' successful Borstar PE loop and gas phase reactor concept, and will use Borealis' proprietary PP catalyst to produce a wide range of standard and advanced grades for applications in the areas of film, fibre, moulding, thermoforming, engineering applications and pipe. The 200,000 tonne/year plant will partly replace the capacity of the two old slurry lines to be closed at the same site.

According to Kent Abbås, Vice President Polypropylene Business Unit, "This is a major milestone for Borealis. The Borstar PP plant in Schwechat is the first of its kind. We are about to prove now that our Borstar technology is also working for polypropylene."
