BOREALIS TIGHTENING SUPERCLEAN AND SUPERSMOOTH SPECIFICATIONS

Last year Borealis gained supplier status to the second parts of the two most prestigious extra high voltage projects in Europe, the "BEWAG"-project in Berlin and the "Copenhagen Metropolitan Project". The company also supplied compounds for the initial parts of the contract.

In order to meet the extremely strict requirements on cleanliness, gradual improvements to the process/procedures have been implemented in production and quality control. As a consequence, Borealis has introduced materials in the Superclean and Supersmooth product lines at enhanced cleanliness and smoothness levels for high stress and extra high stress cables.

The new materials specification offers additional lower acceptance numbers and also smaller size classes have been included in the specifications. By the use of extra high stress materials, lean HV, cable designs can be achieved offering easier handling and fewer joints. To the end user this can deliver lower cost as an installed system as well as increased system safety. Both steps are important for the further transfer of overhead lines to cables as well as the replacement of oil-filled cables which pose an increasing environmental risk to many utilities.

The products with the improved specification will be introduced at the start of April 2000 to co-incide with the opening of WIRE 2000 in Dusseldorf.
