With the support of Objective 1, Yorkshire Forward and the Department of Trade and Industry, CTI is collaborating with a number of companies to promote the introduction of new technologies to traditional industry. CTI is running two projects within the Advanced Metals Technology Initiative, using its expertise to develop these new technologies to make them accessible to companies who currently employ traditional manufacturing techniques and who might not otherwise be able to afford to explore these technologies. With CTI's facilities and expertise in the area of rapid prototyping technologies for high performance castings, they are exploring the potential for this tool to penetrate further into the castings industry. By adopting this technology, companies can save time and money by developing and optimising their procedures to produce their castings 'right first time'. The combination of traditional and novel manufacturing techniques could give a new lease of life to the metal forging and forming industry. It could also create business opportunities within the foundry industry for organisations able to offer alternative manufacturing routes. By identifying the limitations of existing forging and forming tools and products, it will be possible to develop revolutionary tool and product designs. This will be achieved by the introduction of new design methods, advanced forming and joining techniques and alternative materials.
