DUPONT'S NEW APPLICATION-SPECIFIC MATERIALS AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES
29 August 2005 - DuPont Engineering Polymers

Among material applications to be presented is the use of DuPont Zytel HTN high performance polyamide resin for a heat shield used under the bonnet. Other diverse areas of application will include sport & leisure, industrial baking and electronics, where DuPont materials such as its thermoplastic polyesters (Thermx PCT und Crastin PBT) and DuPont Zenite LCP liquid crystal polymer resins feature prominently.

DuPont Engineering Polymers is hosting a joint exhibit with its distributor Biesterfeld Plastic at Stand 5219, Hall A5, during Fakuma 2005 (18-22 October in Friedrichshafen, Germany). Highlights on the stand will include market-specific material advances, overcoming previous limitations for their application, and innovative technologies enabling faster and more cost-effective manufacturing processes.

New high-temperature and hot-oil resistant DuPont ETPV (Engineering Thermoplastic Vulcanizates) is one of the major innovations in the field of thermoplastic elastomers. Introduced to market during K2004, first applications have since been commercialised, including car body plugs that are able to pass through the complete painting and drying process, as well as seals for oil containers which have been produced by way of 2-component moulding.

DuPont will also show medical applications at Fakuma 2005, whereby engineering plastics such as DuPont Delrin POM and flexible Hytrel provide consumers with greater convenience, and manufacturers a greater degree of production efficiency and reliability. A separate area will be dedicated to the combination of functionality with aesthetics, offered by products such as DuPont Surlyn und Delrin, and used particularly by the designers of cosmetics and decorative products.

Technological advances exhibited by DuPont include the welding of engineering plastics by way of laser beams, providing significant cost-efficiencies, particularly during mass production, when compared to other assembly techniques. 'Optifoam' technology, or foam injection moulding, developed by Sulzer Chemtech and the Institut für Kunststoffverarbeitung in Aachen (Germany), is currently being optimised by DuPont, together with customers, on the basis of an exclusive cooperation agreement with Sulzer. The technology enables savings in terms of material usage and cycle time, as well as high quality surfaces and a significant reduction in part warpage. First commercialisations are planned for the start of 2006.
