Benelux-based start up company OrangTiga has launched the world's first fashion belts made 100 percent of DuPont Engineering Polymers, which were selected for their excellent functionality and aesthetics. Yet the closing system of traditional belts, the metal buckle – has remained basically unchanged in hundreds of years. We saw a major opportunity to revolutionize the global belt market by using high performance Engineering Polymers from DuPont and state-of-the-art production technology to produce a totally new design that is progressive, fearless and functional and will represent a leap forward in comfort, safety, fun and self-expression for consumers!" The main body of the belt is made of DuPont Hytrel thermoplastic polyester elastomer, selected for its combination of flexibility and strength and its 'soft touch' surface finish. Koene said: "Hytrel feels good and warm and it has an attractive surface finish. Like leather, Hytrel grows more attractive as it endures wear and tear and ages very well because of its matt graining. It is a great material to wear close to your body." Inspired by the automotive industry's use of chrome-plated window winder handles, the Brani belt's buckle is made of chrome-plated Minlon mineral reinforced nylon. Koene commented: "In many ways, the buckle is the most visible part of the belt and it's important that it looks good. We had originally planned to use metal for the buckle but as our understanding of the properties of engineering polymers grew, we realised that moulding it of Minlon would make lighter, and cheaper and easier to produce. We believe that this chrome-plated solution looks more attractive than metal, and it is certainly just as strong." An innovative release button, designed to quickly and easily loosen the belt by the pressure of a fingertip, is made of Delrin acetal resin, selected for its suitability in snap fit applications. The belt can be tightened just as quickly and easily, by simply pulling the belt body through and releasing the same button. The tail remains neat, comfortable and invisible, inside the body of the belt. The tail's inner base plate is made of Rynite PET thermoplastic polyester resin, selected for its stiffness. The belts are produced in a two-component, injection moulding procedure where the Hytrel section is moulded after the Rynite PET part. Because of the belt's significant length (just over a metre long) and narrow dimensions (4.2 mm), a cascading hot runner system is used for the moulding, with multiple filling points. Brani Waistware belts are available in six colours and three sizes, and are attractively packaged for retail store display. Priced at EUR 60, they are targeted not only at the youth market, but at people of all ages and cultures. The first belts were shipped to 300 stores in the Benelux this summer; deliveries will expand to London and Paris this autumn. OrangTiga was founded in January 2000 by Alexander Koene, Jan De Lancker and Dirk Lorré. Brani Waistware belts are its first product.
