ESAB SUPPORT FOR THE ULTIMATE ROW
13 August 2003 - ESAB Group
| Attention to detail is vital to the success of any expedition and none more so when it's one man alone against everything nature can throw at him. |
Jim Shekhdar, already a record holder for his unassisted row across the Pacific in 1999, now plans to tackle both the Pacific and the Atlantic, with Cape Horn thrown in for good measure, in his latest solo project, Ocean Challenge 2003. This time, however, he'll be going with a little help from ESAB, the world's leading welding and cutting equipment manufacturers. "So often in the past I've noticed that comparatively small things have either been overlooked or come adrift, letting a competitor down," said Jim Shekhdar, commenting on ESAB's role as his lead sponsor. "With ESAB's expertise in specialist welding equipment and consumables, I'm able to have much greater confidence in critical components that have to be welded well enough to withstand the rigours of up to six months at sea. ESAB's Jim Boot is equally confident they can help Jim Shekhdar achieve another 'First' : "Of course, Jim's is not the kind of project we deal with every day, but he'll get priority support from us to help him get around the Horn and into Cape Town without mishap. " Jim Shekhdar sets off on his epic voyage from Invercagill in New Zealand at the end of August, with an anticipated landfall at Cape Town at the end of April 2004, at which time ESAB will be into its centenary year. It will be a timely event, given that ESAB was founded following the invention of the first coated welding electrode by Oscar Kjellberg, a Swedish engineer faced with the problem of successfully welding the critical parts of a ship's boiler. With a history so closely linked to shipbuilding and repair, ESAB were keen to offer Jim support with what must be "the ultimate row".
