NEW ESAB MIGGYTRAC SEMI-AUTOMATES STRAIGHTLINE WELDING
21 October 2002 - ESAB Group

ESAB has introduced the Miggytrac 2000, a device that semi-automates arc welding of straight weld runs and therefore improves efficiency, consistency and quality, as well as relieving operators from having to maintain stressful postures for long periods. Miggytrac 2000 can be used with standard ESAB welding torches, power sources and feed units, so the additional investment required is minimal.

To use the Miggytrac, the operator simply attaches the welding torch and power source, positions the wheeled tractor unit on the workpiece, and sets the welding parameters. The tractor functions as a remote control for the feed unit and has its own control panel on which the operator sets the weld speed, wire feed speed and voltage. Furthermore, the tractor can also be programmed for intermittent welding, with the operator having complete control over the length of the welds and the travel between welds. There is also a useful backfill function that reverses the tractor at the end of the weld run to fill any crater that might have formed.

Although the tractor is quick and easy to set up, it is extremely versatile, especially if used with a suitable semi-automatic power source and cored welding wires. Weld speeds can be set from 150-1500 mm/min and when the intermittent welding function is used, the weld and gap lengths can be controlled from 10-990 mm. To maximise the welding efficiency, a higher travel speed (2500 mm/min) is used to traverse between welds.

The Miggytrac 2000 has been designed to produce high quality welds and therefore features four-wheel drive, a powerful permanent magnet to keep the tractor in the correct position even when welding on inclined surfaces, and guide wheels that can be adjusted so that the tractor can drive itself against the workpiece for fillet welds. On the torch holder there is a rotating slide so that the torch can be set at the best angle, and +/-17 mm of adjustment so that the height can be optimised.

ESAB has published a data sheet that explains the Miggytrac 2000's features and provides the detailed technical specification.

About: ESAB Group
As a logical step following his invention of the covered welding electrode back in 1904, Oscar Kjellberg founded ESAB. Since then, the company has constantly improved on existing methods and materials. At the same time, ESAB has developed new methods to meet the challenge presented by technological progress.

Today the company produces consumables and equipment for virtually every welding and cutting process and application.

100 years of continuous research, development and manufacture have made ESAB the world leader in welding, cutting and also an international supplier of products, know-how and services that none can match.
ESAB's subsidiaries and distributors worldwide are ready to handle your requirements - large and small alike.
