Outside the sports area the mobile digital companion named FLAME 2008 will offer predominant information-services about the town with its integrated roaming-concept. Once the user has defined his individual profile he will only receive the information he really needs. The athletes will be most interested in the communication-function of FLAME 2008: during the games the participants have to live isolated in their villages. In Salt Lake City they were not even allowed to obtain letters from their families and friends. With FLAME 2008 they can get in e-mail-contanct with the world outside whereever and whenever they want to.

The digital companion FLAME 2008 works with wearable computers. A predecessor of this need-orientated information service has already been successfully used by journalists at the German Championships in Athletics 2002. In comparison to this version, FLAME 2008 will offer enlarged functions in any case. Digital companions like FLAME 2008 are developed in the Information Logistics Competency Center, which is a think tank created by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and one of the leading institutions for applied research in information logistics.

At CeBIT a prototype of FLAME 2008 will be shown in hall 3, number C03. Innovations for public institutions are presented at the eGovernment-Centre of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (hall 11, A40). The institute is also demonstrating its projects Teachware on Demand and Security Framework at the stand of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (hall 11, A24). About: Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft undertakes applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprise and of wide benefit to society. Its services are solicited by customers and contractual partners in industry, the service sector and public administration. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft maintains over 80 research units at more than 40 different locations throughout Germany. A staff of some 12,700, predominantly qualified scientists and engineers, works with an annual research budget of over one billion euros. Of this sum, more than € 900 million is generated through contract research. Two thirds of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s contract research revenue is derived from contracts with industry and from publicly financed research projects. The remaining one third is contributed by the German federal and Länder governments, as a means of enabling the institutes to pursue more fundamental research in areas that are likely to become relevant to industry and society in five or ten years’ time.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is also active on an international level: Affiliated research centers and representative offices in Europe, the USA and Asia provide contact with the regions of greatest importance to present and future scientific progress and economic development.
