The misuse of drugs is a growing problem that is setting new challenges for clinical and forensic analysts, but help is now at hand from LGC Promochem, Europe's leading supplier of certified reference materials. LGC Promochem has released the new 2004-05 edition of its well-known Reference materials for clinical analysis and forensic toxicology catalogue.

LGC Promochem has released the new 2004-05 edition of its well-known Reference materials for clinical analysis and forensic toxicology catalogue. This new edition includes known certified reference materials such as drugs of abuse in blood, serum, urine, hair and saliva, and also lists new clinical, forensic and toxicological pure standards and matrix materials from world leaders like Cerilliant, IRMM, NIST, LGC, Medichem and SERO.

Amongst the established products are Cerilliantīs single compound forensic science standard solutions (deuterated and native) of classical drugs of abuse, as well as designer drugs such as Ecstasy and MDEA. Cerilliant's expanded product range also offers new multi-component forensic mixes and standards which, together with the products from the other carefully chosen suppliers, are key to fast analysis for therapeutic drug monitoring, clinical diagnostics and to the validation of forensic determinations for proof of evidence in court cases.

To meet the needs of forensic scientists carrying out low alcohol level determinations on members of flight crews, as required by the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003, a 20mg/100mL aqueous ethanol reference material is available from LGC.

For the first time, the new edition of the catalogue has a separate chapter covering LGC Promochem's range of reference standards for physical properties from viscosity to infrared absorption and from density to optical rotation. The reference materials are catalogued according to the type of physical property being measured which, in most cases, is related to the type of energy involved, such as heat, light, sound and electrical. For example, there are standards for optical properties such as the absorbance or transmittance of light, both for calibrating spectrometers. Other categories include thermal standards for melting point or flash point, properties of particles such as surface area, shape and size, and amperometric and potentiometric standards for pH, redox, ion activity and conductivity.
