MAGICS SMARTSPACE SOFTWARE PROVES TO REDUCE SLS BUILD VOLUME WITH ABOUT 80%
26 May 2006 - Materialise NV

Materialise' SmartSpace software has clearly proven its capability in an independent test executed by Saddleback College, California. The Saddleback College compared the 3D nesting performance of the Magics RP software and the 3D Systems LS software for Laser Sintering. The results show that SmartSpace enables its users to build more parts in a single machine run and consequently save a lot of money and time.

Saddleback tested SmartSpace software on the Sinterstation HiQ (381x330x457 mm) and the Sinterstation Pro (550x550x460 mm) platform, to see how they could get the most out of their 3D Systems machine. The files were first nested with the LS software and then with Magics RP software. The lower the height of the build, the more time and material would be saved. The smaller the build volume, the more capacity would be created on a single machine.

The results were astonishing: Magics SmartSpace advanced 3D geometry nesting technology packs more parts on the platform and reduces build height and time compared to the standard machine software. In this case Magics seemed to have a better use of the XY platform. Magics RP saved approximately 100 mm of build height and reduced approximately 80% on build volume.

SmartSpace automatically lowers
the build height to its absolute mini-
mum, thus saving time and material

About: Materialise NV
Begun as a joint venture with the University of Leuven-Belgium, Materialise was one of the first European rapid prototyping service bureaus. It has since grown into a European supplier of plastic prototype solutions, and today is a worldwide leader in the rapid prototyping industry. Materialise offers a broad range of rapid prototyping, tooling and digital CAD software. In addition, Materialise prototypes and software have established a reputation in medicine and dentistry, with clinicians the world over using them in the most complex surgical cases. Its design products division concentrates on the development of rapid manufacturing. The company is privately owned with several subsidiaries in Europe, Asia and the USA, and employs over 300 people in its 4 divisions.

* Materialise Industrial Services to "materialise" technical prototypes and small series through the most advanced prototyping and tooling techniques.
* Materialise Software to develop the technical software applications that allow a more efficient use of the rapid prototyping techniques.
* Materialise Medical to create medical models using these prototyping techniques and to develop medical software packages that are used by clinicians worldwide to assist them in the most complex cases of surgery.
* Materialise.MGX to manufacture design products for the end-user market. MGX is the youngest division and it draws on the knowledge and expertise of the prototyping division.
