£3 MILLION INVESTMENT IN TRAFFORD PARK COMPANY
03 June 2003 - Great Lakes Chemical Corporation
| Investment at the Great Lakes Trafford Park site now totals £15 million in five years |
Great Lakes Manufacturing (UK) Ltd. is located at Tenax Road, Trafford Park. The site was established in 1939 as ‘The Geigy Colour Company’. In the last 30 years, ownership has passed from Ciba Geigy to the US-owned FMC Corporation, before acquisition by Great Lakes in 1999. Great Lakes’ site at Trafford Park manufactures flame retardants that are used to make televisions, computers, cars and a host of other plastic products safer by reducing the risk of fires and ultimately saving lives. The workforce of over 250 also produces additives that are widely used in arid regions of the world to make drinking water safe. The Trafford Park site has a turnover of more than £70 million per annum, contributing approximately £20 million per annum into the UK economy. Over 80% of production is exported to Europe, the Americas, the Far East and the Middle East. Since consolidation of global production in 2002, this is the only Great Lakes site in the world to manufacture their specific range of products. This and the company’s subsequent £3 million investment clearly demonstrate the Corporation’s commitment to its Trafford Park operations. In fact, almost £15 million has been invested in the Trafford park facility over the last 5 years. The £3 million investment has allowed the site to expand the range of products manufactured and to increase the production capacity for the main Flame Retardant plastic additives by 30%. Previous investment funded the installation of new or enhanced, ‘state-of-the-art’ technologies such as computerised control of the manufacturing and logistics operations. This subsequently led to a seven-fold increase in output of a new family of flame retardant additives, widely used in products such as computer housings. The site is also proud to have just been awarded ISO 14001 environmental management accreditation and to have received the CIA Responsible Care annual award for the fifth year in succession, which places Trafford Park amongst the top chemical sites for safety performance. ISO 14001 is the environmental management standard, internationally recognised as a benchmark for good practice, which has become an important means of delivering continuous improvement to environmental performance. It demonstrates a company’s commitment to minimise its impact on the environment by controlling its operations through procedures that are externally audited.
