THREE NEW ANTI-WEAR AND EXTREME-PRESSURE ADDITIVES
28 April 2003 - Great Lakes Chemical Corporation
| Great Lakes Chemical Corporation has launched Durad 40, Durad48 and Durad 60 trialkyl phosphate anti-wear and extreme-pressure lubricant additives as effective alternatives to aryl phosphate additives for environmentally sensitive applications where the release of phenolic materials is a concern. |
Aryl phosphate ester lubricant additives have been widely used to improve the anti-wear properties of a wide range of mineral oil and synthetic lubricant base stocks, particularly in hydraulic, turbine and general circulatory oil applications. In certain uses, where the oil is exposed to water, these additives may breakdown to release small amounts of phenolic materials. For environmentally sensitive applications, Durad trialkyl phosphate additives provide a phenol-free solution. Applications that require extreme-pressure oil performance, such as metalworking, have traditionally used alkyl acid phosphate-based lubricant additives. These additives are difficult to handle and readily hydrolyse, and alkyl acid phosphates can interact with other additives such as basic metal salts. In addition, they can promote foam when used in aqueous applications and insoluble salts in hard water applications. Durad neutral trialkyl phosphates are free from such disadvantages and synergise very effectively with sulphur carriers to provide enhanced extreme-pressure performance for applications, such as gear oils and metalworking. In these applications, Durad trialkyl phosphates also alleviate the need for additional lubricity additives. Durad trialkyl phosphate additives are designed for use in a variety of applications, based on specific lubricant base stock and performance requirements - Durad 48, for most oil applications; Durad 40 for aqueous applications; and Durad 60 for when high anti-wear performance is needed. Durad trialkyl phosphates are low viscosity liquids that are compatible with a broad range of mineral and synthetic oils. In addition to being ashless (free of metals), Durad additives do not contain elements such as chlorine or sulphur, which are undesirable in some applications. Trialkyl phosphate anti-wear and extreme pressure additives complement Great Lakes’ existing range of triaryl phosphate ester additives for lubricants, antioxidants and fire-resistant fluids.
