GREAT LAKES ANNOUNCES START-UP OF SAUDI-BASED ANTIOXIDANT PRODUCTION UNIT
Great Lakes Chemical Corporation has announced the start-up of a production unit for hindered phenolic antioxidants at Gulf Stabilizers Industries (GSI), the company’s joint venture in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The production of Anox 20 and Anox PP18 complements the broad range of customized Anox No-Dust Blends (NDB) manufactured at the facility. GSI’s board of directors also announced plans to aggressively expand production of the Anox NDB product line to meet growing customer demand. “The strategic location in Al Jubail allows GSI and Great Lakes to not only serve local markets throughout the Middle East, but global markets as well,” said John Lepke, executive vice president of GSI. “Adding yet another production location to our global network enables us to meet our customers’ global sourcing needs and strengthen their security of supply. The expansion is targeted for completion in early 2003.” GSI is a joint venture, formed in December 1999, between Great Lakes Chemical Corporation and the AH Al Zamil Group, one of Saudi Arabia’s leading industrial manufacturing companies. Approximately 70 representatives from major polymer producers in the Middle East attended the first annual Additech conference hosted by GSI, underscoring the growing demand for Great Lakes materials in the region. This educational seminar covered new developments in the use and application of the materials and machinery used in the plastics industry. The event was held April 8 and 9 in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, and was co-sponsored by other leading suppliers to the polymer industry. “Given the success of this first conference, Additech will become a regular feature of what GSI brings to its customers in the region,” said Lepke. Anox 20 provides very low volatility and excellent resistance to extraction from polymer compounds. It is particularly effective against polymer degradation during long-term aging. Anox 20 is also very effective as a process stabilizer, as it exhibits good resistance to discoloration at the high temperatures encountered in thermoplastic polymer processing. Anox PP18 is also very effective as a process stabilizer as it reduces oxidative degradation of most polymeric substances during processing and in end-use applications. It is an excellent stabilizer for polyolefins, impact-modified styrenics, block co-polymers, elastomers, adhesives, PVC and polyurethanes. Anox PP18 is available in both powder and granular form. Both Anox 20 and the Anox PP18 are used in a wide variety of polyolefin applications including automotive components, packaging, toys, plastic pipe, medical devices, and wire and cable applications. NDB technology enables multiple polymer additives to be incorporated in non-dusting physical forms. These forms are proven to increase productivity, reduce production costs, improve final product quality and improve workplace health and safety. Using Anox NDB also eliminates the administrative and logistics costs of purchasing individual raw materials.
