Greene, Tweed & Co Benelux is introducing a new material for pump components that have to operate in acidic conditions. This new thermoplastic composite, which is called WR 014, is primarily designed for rings, bushes, seals and wear plates in pumps in the chemicals and petrochemical industries. The material consists of a modified fluoropolymer matrix, strengthened with long strand carbon fibres. These ensure excellent wear resistance and good self-lubricating characteristics in almost all conceivable conditions.

Apart from its high resistance to all sorts of chemicals and corrosion WR 014 has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. It can thus be used with much more smaller tolerances than other materials. It can therefore prevent under-pressure leaking away, so that the pump efficiency is clearly increased. With this and its other material characteristics WR 014 is an excellent alternative to metallic, carbon, graphite or other polymer-based pump components.

Greene, Tweed Benelux holds plentiful stocks of semi-finished WR 014 products. These can be manufactured within a week to the client’s exact specifications in the company’s Quick Response Centre, which was set up last year. The material is available in diameters varying from 1 inch (2.54 cm) to 33 inch (83.82 cm) and in lengths up to 8 inch (20.32 cm) depending on diameter and wall thickness.

“We have everything here in house to be able to supply customers rapidly with bushes, rings and seals for all kinds of pumps,” Rob van de Velde, General Manager of Tweed & Co Benelux points out. “Apart from WR 014 we also have various other high-quality carbon-fibre reinforced composites.

This means when we manufacture pump components we can choose the best material for the type of pump and the operating conditions,“ adds Van de Velde. “Especially in critical operating situations it is, after all, really important to our clients to have an optimally operating pump back in service as quickly as possible, and without waiting for weeks.”

About: Greene Tweed & Co Benelux BV
Greene, Tweed specialises in the development, manufacture and supply of rings, seals and profiles for industrial applications in which extremely high specifications are set for the material; brand names include Chemraz, WR and AR.

An early product in the portfolio, the G-T Ring, was introduced and approved for use in the landing gear of the F-4 Phantom in 1964. The G-T Ring remains a core product in Aerospace landing gear today.

As the business developed, strategy warranted the establishment of corporate headquarters in Kulpsville, Pa., USA. in the 1970s. With this foothold, the company expanded around the globe. In the early 1980s it introduced several versatile elastomers, such as Fluoraz, and designed pioneering product geometries, such as the first "capped seal." Arlon, a tough, high-temperature, semi-crystalline engineering polymer, also joined the product line, followed shortly by one of Greene, Tweed's most innovative products, Chemraz, a chemical-resistant elastomer, effective in the most extreme temperatures.

Recognizing the race toward a global economy, Greene, Tweed began geographic expansion by opening offices in Germany, England and France. By the mid 1980s, Greene, Tweed had established a presence in the Pacific with a Japanese office. The Asian market has maintained its pattern of growth with additional offices today in Singapore and Korea.

The turn of the century ushered in a new product, Orthtek, a lightweight, thermoplastic composite with high-strength and radiolucent properties, that satisfies the demands of the Medical and Biotechnology industry. Worldwide expansion has continued with new offices in the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. A tradition of creative and innovative ideas has also grown with the development of new products, from new composite technologies and vision systems to fibre optic connectors and extreme electrical connectors.

Greene Tweed’s WR and AR product ranges are distributed by Flowserve all over Europe. In Belgium the Greene Tweed & Co products are also distributed by Humitab BVBA in St.Job in ‘t Goor.
