A NEW AND REVOLUTIONARY LOADING BAY DOCK BUMPER
05 June 2006 - Quadrant EPP
| Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products, together with Oakland International, the UK's foremost loading bay refurbishment and re-modelling company, have jointly developed and launched a new and revolutionary loading bay dock bumper that will significantly reduce on-going maintenance and replacement costs. |
Following an extensive 15 month trial, Oakland has launched the ID Dock Bumper into the UK and European markets. Manufactured from Quadrant EPPs' NYLATRON DB+ material, the Oakland ID Dock Bumper is already in service with major UK distributors and retail outlets and is proving to be the most durable application of its kind available in the marketplace. Dock bumper problems are of real concern to all distribution and logistics companies. The revolutionary Quadrant EPP/Oakland ID NYLATRON DB+ Dock Bumper offers a long-term, cost effective solution to these concerns by delivering greater durability, longer life expectancy and enabling safer loading and unloading conditions. With more than 50 years experience in high-performance plastic materials, machining and applications, Quadrant EPP is a recognised leader in providing knowledge-based services that aid OEMs and design engineers in developing optimum engineering solutions. With the loading bay dock bumper, Quadrant EPP's European Technology Centre based in the U.K., led the development of the application in close partnership with Oakland. During the trial phase ID Dock Bumpers were installed at a major Safeway Supermarket distribution centre in the north of England. This facility operates a 24 hour x 365 day operation with all types of freight vehicles, including tail-lift units that commonly cause significant and costly wear and tear to traditional rubber dock bumpers within a very short period due to repeated raising and lowering movements during loading and unloading activities. In addition to improved performance and economic benefits, importantly the ID Dock Bumper provides a safer loading and unloading environment. Dock levellers with standard size lip extensions do not always extend sufficiently into the rear of the trailer, due to the fact that docking vehicles stand proud of the loading bay. Furthermore, some trailers with air suspension can also compromise the lip projection due to the movement of the trailer as the forklift pushes it away from the dock face. The material properties and performance of NYLATRON DB+ with its high abrasion resistance and tough qualities allow it to be used in formats as low as 50mm thick, significantly thinner than the standard 100mm thickness. By using the thinner version ID bumper, the lip projection into the docking trailer is increased by 50mm to 100mm hence a much safer system is created. Projections over 100mm can be easily achieved by the use of rubber 'packers' behind the ID Dock Bumper. Current ID Dock Bumper installations include: Safeway Supermarkets (100+ units), John Lewis Partnership, a major department store group (50 units), Budgens Supermarkets (86 units), MFI, at 4 distribution sites around the UK, and Excel Logistics and Wincanton Logistics, two of the UK's largest logistics companies. NYLATRON DB+ is a cast nylon 6 material offering optimum processing properties for the economical manufacture of both standard and special-size dock bumpers. Both of which are supplied with standard hole-centres to facilitate ease of fitting without the requirement of alterations to dock concrete facings.
