Rohm and Haas Company, has delivered on the contract awarded by the US Department of Defense for 32,000 lbs of Ambersorb 348F carbonaceous adsorbent for use in M291 chemical skin decontamination kits. The unique adsorbent, containing a bimodal pore system, blended with other Rohm and Haas ion-exchange resin technologies provides for rapid adsorption of chemical agents from skin, effectively sequestering the agent and preventing skin penetration. Under a series of U.S. Army research and development contracts, the M291 chemical skin decontamination kit was first manufactured for the US Army in the early 1990's. The M291 chemical skin decontamination kit is currently the only skin decontamination kit fielded by the US Army. The kit meets all the US Army's requirements for live agent testing, storage, compatibility, shelf life, and safety in use. The M291 chemical skin decontamination kit is regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration as a Medical Device. The M291 chemical skin decontamination kit provides the only US fielded and proven skin decontamination technology available today that safely can be used in the event of a threat and that can be used for training and homeland security drills. Rohm and Haas Company has recognized that there is a need to make available effective and proven chemical skin decontamination equipment for Homeland Security personnel such as first responders, EMS providers, firefighters and hazmat teams. The company is developing a complete and unified chemical skin decontamination technology for the 21st century. Working with the US Department of Defense and Homeland Security Departments, Rohm and Haas plans to provide a product that will be cost effective as well as practical and safe in meeting personal chemical skin decontamination requirements. For more than 60 years, Rohm and Haas has been a leading and innovative global manufacturer of ion exchange resin, adsorbents and catalysts. Ion exchange resins are used to purify drinking water, juices, antibiotics and pharmaceuticals, and to make the sweeteners used in most soft drinks. Rohm and Haas' wide variety of innovative products and services encompasses the power and electronics sector, the chemical and petrochemical markets, drinking water and nutrition as well as the pharmaceutical industry.
