Specialty compounder RTP Company, Winona, MN, has announced the opening of a new lab dedicated to supporting the development and manufacture of specialty compounds specifically used in extrusion applications. "The goal is to provide world class support for our extrusion customers who have very demanding applications," says Alain Creissen, RTP Company Business Manager, Extrusion Applications. The lab houses three extruders capable of producing as little as 1 lb. of film, sheet, tape or rod. This enables the R&D engineers to reproduce typical extrusion conditions in-house that a compound needs to meet. "Now we can get valuable testing feedback within hours, giving us a greater chance of success when we try the formula at the customer's location," says Creissen. In addition to supporting the qualification of new compounds, the new lab supports extrusion specific in-process and final inspection testing including Melt Flow Index, Melt Strength and Filler Dispersion. The overall advantage of the new facility says Creissen is that RTP Company can now develop new products faster and with a higher degree of confidence. "This saves our customers a lot of time and money. Having both compounding and sheet extrusion capability gives us a very competitive advantage."
