RTP COMPANY ADDS FLAME RETARDANT COMPOUNDS TO LONG FIBER FAMILY
RTP Company launched a new family of flame retardant compounds containing long glass fiber. These compounds are available at 30% and 40% by weight glass levels in RTP 100 Series polypropylene and RTP 200A Series nylon 6. They significantly improve tensile strength, flexural strength, impact, and dimensional stability, compared to their respective short-glass fiber counterparts. UL certification of V-0 at 1/16" (1.59 mm) is achievable for both compounds. "Customers requiring flame retardant properties can now enjoy the exceptional strength of long fiber compounds," said Bob Wick, Product Manager for Structural Materials at RTP Company. "They're excellent for industrial fan shrouds, components in electrical and consumer goods, and power tool brackets or housings." Replacing short-glass fiber nylon compounds with RTP Company's long fiber polypropylene compounds makes economic sense. The polypropylene compounds reduce weight by 10%, reduce costs by 27%, and maintain or improve mechanical properties, thanks to lower specific gravities and favorable material costs. "These new flame retardant compounds are ideal when short-glass polypropylene fails strength and impact demands, or in applications where short-glass nylon is costly and lacks chemical resistance or dimensional stability," continued Wick. "The new polypropylene compounds also perform better in moisture-sensitive applications and have better sound dampening than short-glass nylons."
