NEW PC/ACRYLIC ALLOY COMPOUNDS FOR RTP
30 December 2000 - RTP Company

RTP Company, headquartered in Winona, Minnesota, has developed a new series of specialty compounds based on a Polycarbonate (PC)/Acrylic alloy. The RTP 1800A Series offers greater impact strength than PC and maintains the ease of processing associated with acrylic materials. These compounds can be processed at lower temperatures than PC, decreasing the cooling time and cycle time of the injection molding process.

While the PC/Acrylic resin system is already available in the marketplace, the RTP 1800A Series opens new application niches by incorporating wear additives, flame retardants, EMI shielding, PermaStat permanent anti-static protection, and colors. Compounds can be formulated for use in applications where a part will be in contact with food.

Significant material properties include
Superior Impact Strength — in thin and thick wall sections.
Unfilled alloy displays Notched Izod of 30, more than double that of PC or PC/ABS.
Easy Processing — required cylinder temperature of 450-480 degrees F (75-100 degrees cooler than PC) reduces cooling/cycle times.
Good Chemical Resistance — to alcohol and lipids.
Outperforms PC in contact with fats, oils, and alcohols.
Readily Colorable — natural opaque white provides excellent base for a wide range of colors.
No swirling or knitlines like other alloys or blends.
Structural Integrity — tensile and flexural strength values similar to PC and PC/ABS.
Dimensional Stability — shrinkage similar to other amorphous thermoplastics, enabling easy mold conversion.
Engineers at RTP Company cite several key applications for the new alloy compounds, including portable phone and pager housings; appliance components; toys; pen housings; furniture; automotive components (mirror frames, etc); medical devices; gears; protective casings; and extruded/thermoformed sheet applications.
